Interview with former Swiss alpine ski racer Carlo Janka. Written by Melanie Gath.
He's a Swiss ski racing icon. He was active for over 20 years, fought for podium spots, won a total of 11 World Cup races, and became world champion in giant slalom in 2009. The list of ski racer Carlo Janka's successes is long. But what does his life look like today as a father of three, far away from the professional circuit? It seems obvious that the former pro athlete would still spend every free minute on the ski slopes, right? Along with his three children? Or does being a father mean something different to him now? How important is it to him that his kids spend a lot of time in nature? How does he see himself in his role as a dad, and does he have a trick to motivate his kids to get outside with him?
In our "From Father to Father" interview series, namuk founder Franz met with Carlo Janka and asked him all these questions. It was a chat between two dads – honest, direct, and without any small talk. They met last winter, and you can still see snow on the ski slope in the background.
A topic that came up again and again in their conversation was the importance of independence and self-responsibility – values that Carlo learned not just from sports, but from life itself. It's truly important to him to pass this understanding on to his children. In the video, you'll learn what else he wants to give them on their journey, from experiences in nature to personal values, a love for life, and support. Here you can watch the full interview:
